The start of the Electrical Engineering Course at Melbourne
The Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree course was first established at the University of
Melbourne in 1911 the year before the sinking of the Titanic. It was the SOS signal sent out by the
stricken vessel which first dramatised to the public the potential of long distance wireless

A Period of Evolution
By 1930 the thermionic valve had been invented and this revolutionised radio communication, removing
the need for headphones and improving the quality of sound reproduction.
