The Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree course was first established at the University of Melbourne in 1911 the year before the sinking of the Titanic. It was the SOS signal sent out by the stricken vessel which first dramatised to the public the potential of long distance wireless communication based on electromagnetic radiation.
