History Book
The First Fifty Years: A History of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Professor Boris Schedvin, Deputy Vice Chancellor, launched The First
Fifty Years at Discovery Day, 17 August 1997. The publication was
written by Associate Professor John Packer and is an important contribution
to the knowledge of our departmental past.
In the words of the author, it "is an account of the life of the Department
of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, focussing on the personalities
who gave it life and helped shape its goals, traditions and achievements."
It covers everything from the inception of the Department, through the
great personalities of Charles Moorhouse and Arthur Ferguson - both of
whom left lasting legacies, to the Departmental review of 1988 and the
road to the future. By tracking changes in both staff and undergraduate
student courses, as well as the introduction of postgraduate studies and
the increasingly strong links with industry, The First Fifty Years provides
much upon which to reflect and plenty to applaud.
