The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was established in 1947 as part of the Faculty of
Engineering, which has been offering degrees at The University of Melbourne since 1889. The Department
today is internationally recognised for its excellence in teaching and training in a range of
undergraduate degrees and for providing an outstanding
research environment for staff and postgraduate students.
The principal teaching activity of the Department is in the provision of courses to students of the
Bachelor of Engineering degree, Electrical and Computer Engineering and their combined double degree
flavours with significant service teaching into Software Engineering and Mechatronics. The major teaching
areas in the Department are telecommunications (devices, systems and networks), signal processing, computer
engineering and control systems.
The Department also offers both PhD and Masters research programs
as well as three postgraduate coursework degrees -
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters in Telecommunication (MTE) - designed specifically to give
professionals the cutting edge in Telecommunications Engineering.
The Department has a vibrant research program based on strong specialist research interests in
Telecommunications and Signals and Systems Research. We receive exceptional research support from
industry, government and other sources.
Four research centres are housed within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering:
These centres allow us to build effective research teams that contribute to a strong foundation for our
continued success in the international research arena.
At present the Department has 28 teaching and research staff and 33 research only staff. A further 30
general staff provide high-quality technical,
professional and administrative support. There are approximately 70 research students, 70 MTE students
and 600 equivalent full time undergraduate students supported by the Department.
