Second Year

In order to proceed to a major in physics, by the end of the third year of the combined degree, all students should have completed:

640-223/243 Quantum Mechanics and Thermal Physics (Advanced
OR
standard) (Semester 1); and

Either 640-225/245 Electromagnetism and Relativity (Advanced
OR
standard) (Semester 2) or 431-329 Fields and Transmission Lines.  Note that 431-329 is a prerequisite for 431-466 RF and Microwave Optoelectronics. Refer to Course Advisor in Electrical Engineering.

The completion of these subjects, along with other core Engineering and Mathematics subjects, will enable students to proceed to all core 300-level physics subjects.

Physics Laboratory Work

Electrical and Computer Engineering stream students are exempted from undertaking the subject 640-299 Laboratory Work as part of the Physics major, based on their completion of the laboratory components of their Engineering subjects. Completion of these subjects satisfies the prerequisite requirements for the two core 300-level physics laboratory subjects 640-393 and 640-394.

Fourth Year

You should complete 100 Science points, with at least 50 points of 300-level Physics subjects. Students wishing to maintain the option of doing Physics Honours, should consult the relevant section of the Handbook and ensure that they will satisfy the prerequisites.
