FAQs

BE Students - Electrical or Computer Streams

My result is 45 N.  What does this mean?

This means you have failed the exam, which is a hurdle in first and second year subjects.  It means you will need to repeat the subject. Further information about hurdles is available on the web page for each subject

I failed a subject. Can I have my paper re-marked?

No. It is University policy that all papers that attract a fail grade are checked twice by independent examiners before the results are made available to students. The Department implements this policy rigorously with a strict marking code.

Does my degree certificate specify my area of specialisation, e.g. Communications, Control, Computer?

No. Your degree is simply the Bachelor of Engineering.

How are honours awarded?

The award of honours is based on your performance in the course. Unlike other Faculties, e.g. Science, there is no requirement for an extra honours year. The calculations take account of your performance in second, third and final year. Honours are awarded if the final weighted average mark over the set of specified core subjects exceeds 65%.

Can I overload?

see Melbourne School of Engineer Course Overload Policy

I passed my subject but I'd still like to look over my examination paper to see where I lost marks.

The Department has an advertised time when students are permitted to review their papers under strict examination conditions. Generally, useful feedback is not available to students if they check their papers. It is far better to ask for feedback on problems during the semester when the subject is taught and tutors in the subject are available.

The Department has an advertised time when students are permitted to review their papers under strict examination conditions. Ask in the General Office on level 3. Generally, useful feedback is not available to students if they check their papers. It is far better to ask for feedback on problems during the semester when the subject is taught and tutors in the subject are available.

Does it matter whether I do my Science year in fourth year, and my final Engineering year in fifth year, or the reverse, ie Engineering first, then Science.

In principle, no. You can do these in either order. Check the standard clourse plan for your particular course

How are honours awarded?

As for BE students. Honours are awarded for the Engineering component of your course only, and your Science year is excluded from the calculations. Science subjects which are also core for the Engineering degree eg 620-231 Vector Analysis are included. Which subjects count towards Science points?

All subjects listed in the Science section of the Handbook. This includes almost all Computer Science subjects.

If I complete all the requirements of the combined degrees in four years, do I have to do a fifth year?

No. Once you have completed all the requirements, your degrees can be awarded.
