JE5 – Mobile Remote Control Technology

Students: Ben Madsen, Navin Peiris

Supervisor: Dr Jamie Evans

Have you ever desired to change your TV through your phone?

Have you ever lost your remote controls, or woken up with the TV blasting in the room next door or wanted more than one remote in your house?

This project aims at solving all these problems for the everyday consumer. Currently control over television, video and DVD player is restricted to line of sight. This project will enable remote control of all of these devices without the requirement of line of sight by using Bluetooth Technology. It aims at building an embedded remote control transmitter which connects to handheld devices (Mobile Phone, PDA etc) via Bluetooth. The user runs the remote control application from their device, which sends the required commands across the Bluetooth link to the remote transmitter. This command is read in by the control microprocessor which then locates the required remote control code in its memory and transmits it to the required device through an Infrared transmitter. The design has the ability to either access standard remote control codes (Sony, Samsung etc.) or to learn any new codes such as Cable TV and DVD etc.

This project should hopefully have good commercialisation in the consumer market due to it being unique yet highly useful. It is an innovative design for wireless control of household and entertainment devices, which can be cheap and marketable in everyday homes.
