SH2 – Voice over IP over Wireless

Voice over IP is emerging as a viable alternative to traditional telephones. The reason for its feasibility is that it’s free and relatively easy to implement. Although the technology is not new, it is not clear how well voice traffic sounds when delivered over congested wireless LANs. This project involves designing experiments to measure voice performance over wireless LANs, including LANs with multiple hops in ad-hoc mode. In addition, we will implement a quality of service mechanism that gives priority to voice over data, and to demonstrate the resulting gain in performance accrued by the voice traffic. This will be achieved through designing an appropriate queuing and scheduling discipline to implement in the routers of the network.
