Sensor webs are an emerging technology with varied application, based on intracommunicating, spatially distributed sensors of various types. The application considered in our project is that of asset management.
The aim of the project is to develop a prototype system using radio-frequency tags and sensors, which would identify pre-assigned tags. The system would be able to manage assets, as well as provide some protection against theft.
The first stage of the project is based on a simulated environment, rather than the use of physical sensors. As part of the development, the project is also aimed at providing a more generic sensor web architecture, by evaluating and applying the existing geographical information system standards (OpenGIS).
There is still a lot of research being done on sensor webs, and no doubt our prototype will enable further experimentation. The prototype may also serve a practical purpose, as it may be installed on level 3 of the ICT building. An operational standards-compliant system may also be of commercial value to our clients. |
