Angus MacDonald
Chief Technologist, Sun Microsystems Australasia
As Sun Microsystems' Chief Technologist and leading technology evangelist for Australia and New Zealand, Angus McDonald is not afraid to make bold predictions, and proffers the good and the not-so-good, in his engaging discussions about the future of the IT industry. In his role, Angus consults to Sun customers and partners about the application and implementation of enterprise-wide architectures. He acts in an advisory capacity to key government departments, providing guidance on the future of the IT industry and what technologies should be encouraged in particular markets.
Angus is a Sun veteran with more than 15 years' experience in various customer facing positions within Sun Australia and New Zealand. Angus identifies this as the rough age of the internet as we use it today and he fondly remembers being able to browse the whole world wide web in a morning. Angus was first attracted to Sun for its innovative thinking and technologies. Angus believes Sun is at the forefront of technologies used to power the internet today, whether it be the underlying hardware, or the software stack that supports the Web.
Sun's acquisition of MySQL, open sourcing of the Glassfish application server, the Solaris 10 operating systems and its software stack in general, have generated considerable interest in Sun's overall technology strategies and Angus is at the forefront. With over 30 years' IT experience, as an end user (he trained as an industrial chemist), as an application developer and architect, then finally in the vendor environment, he has a strong historical industry understanding. Angus understands where the industry has come from, has an insight into the coming developments and some strong views on where we need to head, which he is not shy in sharing.
As the growth of the Web creates greater demand on a company's IT infrastructure, the flip side of this opportunity is the cost of powering this environment. Cost in both environmental and economic terms. Sustainable IT is another of his passions, and with the emergence of debate around global warming and carbon trading, it is on the agenda for all CIO's. His focus is not the science and debate around global warming but rather the benefits companies can reap, both economic and intangible, by moving toward a more sustainable IT environment.
An entertaining speaker, Angus is able to balance his commitment to Sun with his understanding of the market, the Web, society and our modern IT challenges to deliver talks that are not the normal marketing speak of many "company presenters", and offer a balanced perspective.
