  • Two PhD scholarships available - closing date 31 Mar 2008

Rapid Optimisation in Underground Mining Network Design

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering together with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is undertaking a large ARC Linkage project with AMIRA International Ltd. The chief investigators on the project are Professor Hyam Rubinstein, Dr Marcus Brazil and Professor Doreen Thomas. The aim is to optimise the design of underground mines by strategic modelling. There will be exciting opportunities to experience the mining industry and also to learn some interesting theory about shortest networks.

Two PhD scholarships are available for high achieving students. The scholarships will provide a stipend of up to $26,000 per annum and there is additional funding for equipment and travel. There is potential to earn additional income through project work or teaching support in either Department. For a student who has successfully obtained other scholarships, such as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), a funded top up scholarship may be available.

In order to meet the admission criteria, applicants should have a strong background in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering or equivalent with honours H2A or better. Applications may be made at any time up to the closing date of 31 March, 2008.
