Some Career Highlights

Professional Consultancy (2000-2002)

Established the Regulatory function for telecommunications carrier RequestDSL. As regulatory adviser, contributed to business plan that resulted in raising $20M of venture capital with extension to $40M. Continuing as consultant on regulatory issues and marketing strategy for broadband Internet access products. Also delivering a Management Information System using Balanced Scorecard.

Lecturing (1985-2002)

Many years experience lecturing in Teletraffic Engineering, Network Management, Network Design, and Internet Engineering.

Service Dashboard (2000)

Led the design and implementation of a comprehensive web-based system “Service Dashboard” for reporting on all of Telstra’s Internet Business.

Caching Strategy and Rollout (1998)

Defined business requirements for caching and developed a caching strategy for Telstra. Managed a Proof of Concept Trial and the successful rollout and optimisation of the selected system. Co-authored and presented a paper at INET 98 at Geneva.

Visiting Researcher at Bellcore, USA (1990)

Worked in (Bellcore (New Jersey) for a year as a visiting researcher. Research included management of broadband networks, and distributed simulation

Manager of Research Teams at Telstra Research Laboratories (1980 - 1998)

Led research in Telstra and at University Centres on many topics, achieving an international reputation for the innovative solutions developed by his team:

PhD University of New South Wales (1980)

Awarded PhD degree for thesis “A Study of Teletraffic Measurement and Other Estimation Problems”, which combined theoretical modelling of Bayesian estimators as finite-state dynamical systems with a practical method for quantifying and managing the errors of measuring and forecasting telecommunications network traffic.

Articulated tram in Geneva Snapped while on a break from INET '98. (See an interesting paper.)

Genevois trams have an excellent ticketing system. The vending machine prints a ticket that tells you which tram to catch and where to change.

Cisco Headquarters Visit to Cisco was very stimulating, even though the headquarters building looks plain from the outside.

Different sort of charge comes from Electric Vehicle Charger in the parking lot at Fry's Electronics. No-one was using it that day (or maybe ever?).

Of the many sights along 17 Mile Drive, this lone cypress tree, growing on an unprotected rocky headland, was one that caught my eye. It was a beautiful sight in the setting sun. A few other people have thought so too, for example:
